#Schrapnel from the attack today on the KBC's Kachin Theological college in #Kukai. It was hit with 3 #Artillery shells from the #BurmeseArmy, injuring 4 students.
Another university town, #MaiJaYang, was also hit in a separate attack as well as an #IDPcamp of civilians who fled the conflict.
Mai ja yang city is on the China-Myanmar border and has Kachin National College, College of Education and Federal Law Academy and other schools, KIO It is also known as Education City

Kachin tribal chiefs leading the #Manau celebratio

Kachin tribal chiefs leading the #Manau celebration in Shatapru quarter for the Kachin Baptist Convention's 50th anniversary, Myitkyina.
The #kachin people often celebrate the Manau around February. Men carry swords, and women different accessories ( fans or handkerchiefs ). Tribal chiefs take the lead of an extremely long procession, lasting for hours, where people, village after village, follow each other for a dance that takes the form of a giant spiral. The #jinghpaw ethnic group lives on both sides of the border between China and Myanmar. Although the Manau finds its roots in animist beliefs, it is celebrated by Christians today.

everydaykachin note: A group of water buffalo herders resting near the University of Mai Ja Yang building. The university is located in the city of Mai Ja Yang - the KIO's second capital city. Mai Ja Yang is the home to many educational institutions, including the Federal Law Academy (FLA), the Teachers' Training College (TTC), the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences (ILAS) among many others.

artist caption : Many jobless people all over Burma moved north and took up small gold mining after the Burmese military coup. There are many conflicts, political instability and chaos in Burma and people are using it to illegally exploit gold and other resources in Kachin state.

Everyday Kachin note :
In these makeshift gold mines, the use of mercury to collect gold is common. The toxicity of mercury can lead to serious skin problems and in many causes, loss of fingers. Mercury can also attack the nervous system and exposure can lead to lifelong disabilities.

After the long slow migration from Mongolia, the Kachin people have been settled in Burma, India & China since long before those borders were clearly defined. In China they are an officially recognized ethnic group by the name Jingpo. They host Manau festivals and keep close contacts with their clan brothers and sisters living within Burma.

Everyday Kachin Note :
Depression is a serious issue in the IDP camps. With the displacement lasting over a decade now, the feeling of not being able to provide for one's family weighs heavy on this group of previous self-sufficient farmers & hunters. Finding a healthy meal for one's family is something everyone of these displaced people are very capable of doing, but it requires access to land to grow and forests to hunt. Despite making just a few hundred dollars per year, these families had a rich life in many ways. A life that can not be recreated without land.

Oct 6th 2013. In a rare chance the KIO leadership was able to meet with UN representatives in the no-man's land between the KIO and Burmese Army control areas. The highest ranking KIO representative to join was Gen. Sumlut Gun Maw. These peace talks collapsed and many observers agreed that the real point for the Burmese to organize Peace talks was just to get sanctions lifted, not to build short or long term peace. The Burmese army was on the offensive for the duration of the peace talks and often greatly increased the severity of attacks just prior to a fresh round of talks.

The students were taking Kachin Subject exam on the first day of matriculation exam in Laiza High School, 21 April, 2022.
Despite the ongoing war and pandemic in Kachin, the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) began giving matriculation exams in KIO-administered areas yesterday (21 April).
A total of 2,192 students are taking the exam, which took place until the 28th of April, 2022.
Everyday Kachin Notes : The number of students studying under the KIO has increased by about 50% since the military coup. Many Kachin students were previously educated under the Burmese education system. Since the coup, many of these schools have closed or are no longer accessible to them.
